Recently, the BN Chairman and UMNO President publicly stated that holding GE16 earlier than the final constitutional deadline (which runs into early 2028) would be "better" to secure a fresh mandate from the public.

He states that an early election proposal is intended to restore absolute political stability and allow the government to address pressing economic and social issues directly with voters.

Read the statement carefully and scrutinise who has been threatening the political stability of the present government.

In Dec 2022, the present government, the Madani government of which UMNO and BN are part of, held a vote of confidence in Parliament.

The vote of confidence was tabled and seconded by the present 2 Deputy Prime Ministers, Fadillah Yusof and Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

148 MPs, exactly 2/3 of the total number of MPs in the Dewan Rakyat from PH, Barisan Nasional (BN), Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) and other smaller parties supported the motion.

Did any MPs or any of the political coalition that supported the vote of confidence retracted their support for the government between Dec 2022 to the present date?

None.

Only PAS, which did not support the vote of confidence in Dec 2022. was griping away and of late even called for the dissolution of Parliament to return the mandate to voters, citing internal turmoil and open friction between Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional within the Unity Government.

Was there any friction between PH and BN?

Leaders from both sides explained that political maneuvering and politicking at the state level are separate from governing the country at the federal level.

So what friction is PAS referring to?

PAS was never part nor support the present government.

And they do not have the numbers to threaten the present government.

So what political stability is the BN Chairman and UMNO President was referring to?

The ordinary rakyat only see the continuous threats from UMNO including calling for an early election in Johor, unilaterally without consulting their partners in the Federal government as the party that is threatening political stability in this country.

UMNO is the "musuh dalam selimut" or "a wolf in sheep's clothing" that is threatening the present political stability in the country.

The thinking rakyat knows that UMNO is pushing for an early not just to leverage political momentum but principally to manage ongoing legal or corruption scrutiny facing its key leadership.

The heightened public focus on enforcement actions and financial inquiries, such as probes tied to the Tabung Haji institutional reviews and FELDA has been unsettling the BN/UMNO leadership and based on the beliefs that they have the political momentum stemming from their total annihilation of the political opponents in the Johor and Negeri Sembilan elections, UMNO has this belief that they will return to Putrajaya if the 16th GE is held this year.

Would the ordinary Malaysians help and return UMNO/BN to Putrajaya in the next GE?

According to many pundits and analysts, the answer is yes.

Where is PAS and what is in there for them in this political scenario?

UMNO’s Deputy President has already stated in no uncertain terms at the general assemblies of Umno Youth, Wanita Umno and Puteri Umno recently - Umno must spearhead any cooperation aimed at forging Malay-Muslim political unity.

Meaning in any cooperation or collaboration where the anchor is BN/UMNO, which in this case is PAS, PAS has to play 2nd fiddle but this time will be the supporting actor to BN /UMNO.
