It seems that no matter how serious the crime, if you were once at the top in Malaysia, there's a chance you might just get to spend your sentence in the comfort of your own home.
The latest in this saga is the news that former Prime Minister Najib Razak, currently serving a reduced six-year sentence for his involvement in the RM42 million SRC International Sdn Bhd case, is seeking to serve the remainder of his sentence at home.
Let's not forget the context here: Najib was found guilty of abuse of power, criminal breach of trust, and money laundering in connection to the 1MDB scandal, one of the largest corruption scandals in history. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison and fined RM210 million. Now, thanks to the generosity of the Pardons Board, his sentence has been halved to a mere six years, and his fine reduced to RM50 million. And yet, even that seems to be too much for him.
It's not enough that Najib's sentence has been significantly reduced; now he wants to further skirt justice by serving his time in the comfort of his own home. This is not only an insult to the judicial system but also a slap in the face to the Malaysian people who have suffered the consequences of his actions.
What message does this send to the public? That if you're powerful enough, you can commit egregious crimes and still get to enjoy the comforts of home while serving your sentence? This sets a dangerous precedent and undermines the rule of law in Malaysia.
The government must stand firm against this request. Najib should serve his sentence in prison, just like any other ordinary citizen would have to. Granting him home detention would not only be a miscarriage of justice but also a betrayal of the trust of the Malaysian people. It's time to show that no one is above the law, no matter how powerful they may be.
