Datuk Seri Nga Kor Ming, the clock you set yourself just rang. Najib Razak is going home — not to a cell, to a house, with security arrangements and presumably better food, on the King's own clemency, the moment his fine clears. If that isn't the scenario you swore your Cabinet seat against, I'd love to hear what would have qualified.
Let's rehearse the timeline, because Nga's camp has been rewriting it in real time. After BN duly walloped Pakatan Harapan 48 seats to 8, Nga discovered his sentence had a comma in a different place all along — turns out he only meant he'd resign if Najib got out without serving a punishment commensurate with his crime, a formulation flexible enough to survive almost anything short of a Buckingham Palace-style state pardon with a marching band. Convenient, that. Principles that need a press statement to relocate themselves aren't principles, they're position papers.
Then came September's dress rehearsal: the Pardons Board met on the 11th, Zahid ordered up some "good news," and got a deferral instead. Nga presumably exhaled. A week later, no dress rehearsal — the real thing. The King convened the board again, and this time the answer was yes: house arrest, conditional pardon, fine payable on demand. Najib walks out of Kajang and into his own living room to serve out the rest of a sentence that once ran into the 2030s on paper.
Is that "released"? Nga's people will tell you no — he's still serving time, technically, under conditions, notionally revocable. Fine. Ask any Malaysian outside the Cabinet whether a man swapping a prison cell for his own house counts as getting out, and see how long that argument survives contact with reality. The distinction is a lawyer's distinction, which is fitting, since Nga is one, and lawyers are precisely the people best equipped to explain why a promise doesn't mean what it plainly meant when a room full of voters heard it.
Here is what should embarrass him most: he never needed a semantic escape hatch. He could simply say the political calculus changed, that resigning now serves no one, that DAP staying in Cabinet does more for judicial integrity than a grand walkout. That's an actual argument, and reasonable people could debate it. Instead we got the incremental redefinition — first "released" becomes "released without commensurate punishment," and by the time Najib is literally sleeping at home on royal say-so, we'll no doubt be told the real red line was always about the fine being paid in full, in cash, by Najib personally, witnessed by two independent notaries.
Akmal Saleh offered to draft Nga's resignation letter back in July, as a joke. It isn't a joke anymore. Nga doesn't need Umno's ghostwriter — Bahasa Malaysia and English both have a perfectly good four-letter word for what's expected of him now, and it isn't "clarify." He set the trap himself, wound the spring, invited the cameras. The King has now sprung it for him. All that's left is whether Nga steps into it or spends the next fortnight discovering a third, even more elastic, definition of “resign.”
