Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s sudden decision to step down as Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman without a clear, structured handover has reignited an old question in Malaysian politics: is this strategic brilliance at work, or a case of political irresponsibility disguised as restructuring?

Muhyiddin is no stranger to political manoeuvring. Playing politics for power has long been considered his forte. From the collapse of Pakatan Harapan to the sidelining of Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, his rise to the premiership in 2020 was not built on ideological clarity or coalition sincerity, but on tactical consolidation. Coalitions, under Muhyiddin, have often been instruments - not partnerships of equals, but ladders to position himself at the top.

This context matters when examining his abrupt resignation as PN chairman on Jan 1, 2026. Leadership transitions, especially in fragile coalitions like PN, require clarity, legitimacy and buy-in from all component parties. What PN received instead was confusion, public contradiction and an unresolved power vacuum.

PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang has denied speculation that his party sought to oust Muhyiddin or take over PN leadership, insisting that unity remains PAS’s priority. He also dismissed claims that the issue was discussed during PAS’s retreat, attempting to project stability. Yet stability is difficult to claim when PN’s own components are issuing conflicting accounts of what was agreed behind closed doors.

Muhyiddin’s former principal private secretary, Datuk Marzuki Mohamad, has added another layer to the saga. According to him, PAS did seek the PN chairman’s post after Muhyiddin stepped down - a move opposed by Gerakan and the Malaysian Indian People’s Party (MIPP). Their resistance was not ideological but strategic: PAS’s hardline Islamic image risks alienating non-Malay and non-Muslim voters, and Muhyiddin’s continued presence was seen as a necessary counterbalance.

The proposed compromise - strengthening the PN presidential council led by Muhyiddin while creating an executive council chaired by a PAS nominee - may sound elegant on paper. But it collapsed in practice. PAS leaders later denied that the abolition of the PN chairman’s post was ever agreed upon, contradicting Muhyiddin’s written claims. A technical committee meant to finalise power distribution was never formed. The result? A coalition stuck mid-restructuring, with authority blurred and trust eroded.

This is where the charge of irresponsibility gains traction. A leader stepping down is not inherently problematic. Doing so without ensuring institutional continuity, consensus, and constitutional clarity is. Muhyiddin’s resignation appears less like a clean exit and more like a tactical retreat - removing the title while retaining influence as head of the presidential council. Power, in other words, without accountability.

If Muhyiddin truly intended to stabilise PN, a transparent transition plan would have been essential. Instead, PN is now mired in internal disputes, public denials, and credibility damage - just months away from gearing up for GE16.

Ultimately, this episode reinforces a familiar pattern. Muhyiddin excels at entering power but struggles with exits that strengthen institutions rather than himself. Coalitions cannot survive on manoeuvres alone. Without sincerity, structure and trust, even the most carefully calculated power plays risk leaving nothing behind but political wreckage.
