The decree issued by Tuanku Muhriz in Negeri Sembilan thwarted the efforts of those greedy and selfish politicians to `seize’ power against the will of the voting public in Negeri Sembilan.
And the voting public is relieved and glad that the will of the ordinary Malaysians exercised in the ballot box are upheld.
The will of the voters at the elections must be respected.
Elections belong to the people, not political parties.
It is the ordinbary rakyat who exercise their fundamental right to determine who will govern them.
When politicians switch allegiances or form coalitions that contradict their campaign promises and the public’s vote, it is a betrayal of trust that undermines the democratic process.
Events of Feb 2020 known as the Sheraton Move remains fresh in the minds of many Malaysians who are still angry and disturbed over how politicians backstabbed the ordinary rakyat with their manouevers to seize power against the will of those who voted in 2018.
It is undemocratic when they directly negate the choice of the majority of voters.
Voters cast ballots based on pre-election promises.
If politicians form alliances with opponents after the election, they are acting against the mandate given by the people.
Politicians must show their democratic responsibility for forming a government.
Politicians who misused the votes of the ordinary rakyat as a playing field for their political games are totally immoral and corrupt.
The power grab in Feb 2020 where parties switch sides or make coalitions that were not explicitly voted for, acting contrary to the spirit of representative democracy, removes the ability of those who voted for change in May 2018 and for the ordinary rakyat to hold the right person accountable for the resulting policy outcomes.
It was clear both in Feb 2020 that it was the politicians, who are supposed and has a responsibility to uphold democracy in the country are the ones that are undemocratic with their maneuvering and cooperationg against the will of the voting public after a general election.
All these politicians have demonstrated widespread contempt in electoral accountability.
Position of a minority government weakened?
In theory yes but only when the rest, collectively, holds a no confidence motion against the leader of the minority in a parliament or assembly sitting.
In the case of Feb 2020 and in the recent Negeri Sembilan upheaval, why didn’t those claiming they have the majority and trying to usurp the existing leadership holds a no confidence motion but instead collectively signed and in the process of abusing the purpose and objective of a statutory declaration, to oust the sitting leadership?
Maybe it is time for a law to be enacted or an amendment be made to the Anti Hopping Law whereby those who flout and undermine voters’ choices will face immediate and forceful penalties.
