When was the last time you were truly bored?

Not the kind of boredom that lasts for a few seconds before you unlock your phone. I mean the kind where there is nothing to do, no notifications to check, no videos to watch, and no messages waiting for a reply.

For youngsters today, that situation is becoming increasingly rare.

The moment we find ourselves with a few spare minutes, we instinctively reach for our devices. Whether we are waiting at a bus stop, standing in a queue, or sitting in a car, most of us are addicted to the virtual world. Social media and endless streams of content have made boredom almost impossible to experience.

As someone who belongs to Gen Z, I often wonder whether this is changing us in ways we do not fully realise.

We now live in a world where information can be accessed within seconds. We can learn new skills, connect with people across the globe, and watch online entertainment from almost anywhere. There is no doubt that technology has transformed the way we live and improved many aspects of our daily lives.

However, while we have gained convenience and connection, we may have quietly lost something important along the way.

For years, boredom was viewed as something negative. Nobody enjoys feeling bored, and most of us try to avoid it whenever possible. Yet boredom serves a purpose that is often overlooked.

Some of our most creative ideas emerge when our minds are left alone. Think about the times when you have found a solution to a problem or suddenly had a brilliant idea. Chances are, it did not happen while scrolling through social media.

Instead, it may have happened while staring out of a window, taking a walk, or simply sitting in silence while your mind was free to wander.

Boredom gives our brains room to think. It encourages imagination and curiosity. When there is a lack of distractions competing for our attention, we begin asking questions and exploring our own thoughts.

The problem is that many of us rarely give ourselves that opportunity anymore.

Instead of sitting with our thoughts, we immediately fill every moment with content. We consume hundreds of short videos every day. We are constantly connected and constantly stimulated.

Despite all this activity, many young people feel mentally exhausted.

One reason is that our brains were never designed to process endless streams of information without a break. We move from one piece of content to the next at such a rapid pace that we barely have time to think about what we have just seen. We are always consuming but rarely reflecting.

This habit can also affect our ability to focus. Reading a book or working on a long-term project requires patience and concentration. However, after becoming accustomed to short videos and instant entertainment, many people find it harder to stay engaged with tasks that require sustained effort.

Constant stimulation may also prevent us from understanding ourselves.

Some of life's most important questions cannot be answered through a search engine such as Google or Microsoft Bing. What are our goals? What truly matters to us?

The answers often emerge during quiet moments. They appear when we slow down, reflect, and allow ourselves to think without distractions.

This does not mean that we should abandon technology. Smartphones and social media have become valuable tools in education and daily life. The issue is not technology itself but how dependent we have become on constant stimulation.

The next time you find yourself waiting in line, resist the urge to reach for your phone immediately. Look around. Observe the people and environment around you. Allow your mind to wander.

It may feel uncomfortable at first. However, you might be surprised by what happens when your brain is finally given space to breathe.

Generation Z has become the generation that never gets bored. Yet perhaps boredom is not something we should avoid. Perhaps it is something we need to rediscover.
