YAB Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim,
I write to you today as a concerned citizen who believes in your vision of Malaysia Madani. While we acknowledge the government's duty to uphold the multi religious beliefs systems which is the core fundamentals of the nation i.e. Rukun Negara. There is a growing and dangerous trend that requires your immediate moral leadership.
The technicality of Hate
Recently, we have observed individuals, groups and netizens using the technical status of certain Hindu temples to incite “haterism” and social division. While these actions may stop short of physical harassment, the physiological and social impact is profound. By labelling historical sites exclusively as illegal(haram), a narrative is being fuelled that emboldens some to treat these places of worship with contempt rather than the respect a multi-faith nation requires.
In the tapestry of Malaysia Madani, the threads of "Ihsan" (Compassion) and "Hormat" (Respect) are meant to be the strongest. Yet, a growing trend of digital and social "haterism" directed at Hindu temples is threatening to fray those very threads. While the Prime Minister has championed a Malaysia for all, your silence on the rising vitriol surrounding temple land issues is becoming increasingly conspicuous.
We are seeing a sophisticated form of prejudice. It isn't always blunt harassment; it is "haterism" masked as civic concern. Individuals on social media frequently target Hindu places of worship, focusing purely on their "unauthorized" or "illegal" status. While land laws must be respected, these commentators often ignore the historical context—that many of these shrines were established by plantation including mining workers or staff decades before zoning laws or national land code or even government existed.
By stripping away the human and historical element, these individuals create a vacuum where hate can grow. They present these temples not as houses of God, but as "obstructions" or "encroachments." This narrative doesn't just call for legal review; it invites public contempt.
The Cost of Neutrality
When the leadership remains silent, it is often interpreted by the public as a "quiet nod" to the status quo. For the Malaysian Indian community, seeing their heritage labeled as "haram" without a balancing word from the top creates a sense of alienation.
The Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) often acts swiftly on issues of 3R (Race, Religion, and Royalty) when it involves the majority, yet there seems to be a hesitation to step in when the target is a minority faith's infrastructure. True leadership in a multicultural society isn't just about managing the majority; it’s about protecting the dignity of the few.
A Call for a Madani Resolution
A government that prides itself on "Compassion" cannot simply hide behind land titles or law. We need:
Proactive Regularization: A clear, federal-level directive to state governments to expedite the gazetting of historical places of worship.
A Stance Against Incitement: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) must recognize that "haterism"—even if it doesn't lead to immediate violence—creates a toxic environment that violates the spirit of the Rukun Negara.
Visible Leadership: The PMX needs to remind the nation that a temple is more than bricks and mortar; it is the heart of a community which had contributed significantly at various fields and positions at the pre- and post- independence.
Conclusion
Building a nation is about more than GDP and political stability; it is about the "Rasa Sayang or Mutual Respect” we have for one another. If we allow few individuals to weaponise land status to spread hate against Hindu temples, we are not just losing buildings—we are losing our soul as a nation.
PMX, it is time to speak. Not just as a leader of the government, but as the moral compass of a Malaysia that belongs to everyone. So, these individuals have to reprimand and school them not to go beyond of taking action or laws in their hands. I strongly believe the entire Muslim brothers and sisters are not in favour of their actions by assessing the no. of likes and comments.
P/S: On behalf of the people of Malaysia we humbly request PMX to reinstate the status quo of Pathrakaliamman temple, and other temples at its original place due to its cultural and heritage significance, with now mosque build along with it will further propel unity to unprecedented height within and internationally under your leadership.
