Pakatan Harapan has lost Negri Sembilan. For the Reformasi movement, this is a reckoning.
Two structural forces converged to deliver this outcome: first, the consolidated conservative pact between BN and PN; and second—far more painful—the self-inflicted erosion of support from within Pakatan's own progressive base.
The Opposition United. We Did Not.
The first factor is well understood. The opposition united. They showed up. They voted as a bloc.
The second factor is harder to confront, because it implicates us. It forces us to look not at our opponents, but in the mirror.
The Disillusioned Progressive
What do we see there? A familiar figure: the disillusioned progressive. They supported Anwar fervently—until he became Prime Minister. They championed reform—until reform required compromise. They believed in change—until change arrived slower than their hopes.
Now they focus obsessively on unfulfilled promises, blind to achievements. They dismiss "be patient" as an excuse. They refuse to acknowledge that a unity government, by definition, cannot move at the speed of a mandate. Constraints are real. But to this progressive, constraints are betrayal.
And from that place, they decide to punish Anwar.
Withdrawing Affection to Teach a Lesson
Consider the spouse who withdraws affection to teach a lesson. Staying home on election day. Voting third-party in protest. These are the political equivalent of that withdrawal.
You tell yourself you are holding him accountable. But accountability requires the relationship to survive. If you weaken your partner until they fall, you are not teaching—you are ending the marriage. And in that vacuum, someone else takes over.
This is not just analogy. It is cause and effect.
Words Have Consequences
When progressives circulate disparaging messages, amplify every flaw, and deny every achievement, they fracture their own community. They demoralise the base. They give permission to others to disengage. Divisive speech splits the progressive bloc. Hurtful speech damages not just Anwar's reputation, but the credibility of the coalition he leads.
Meanwhile, the conservatives do something simpler: they align. They suppress internal differences. They show up. And they win.
To Punish Anwar Is to Punish Yourself
The coalition you are weakening is the only viable vehicle for the Malaysia you claim to want—pluralist, humane, democratic. That Malaysia does not arrive through purity. It arrives through political power. Messy, compromised, imperfect political power.
If you withdraw that power out of disillusionment, you do not get purity. You get conservative dominance. You get a government that does not even pretend to care about the reforms you value.
Negri Sembilan is not an anomaly. It is a warning.
Before You Post, Before You Stay Home
Before you write that critical post. Before you stay home. Before you circulate that disparaging message—ask yourself one question:
“Am I punishing Anwar, or am I punishing the future I want to see?”
Critique is vital. Holding leaders accountable is necessary. But there is a line between constructive pressure and self-destructive sabotage.
The Bigger Picture
Progressives pride themselves on seeing the bigger picture. The bigger picture today is this: the conservatives are united, disciplined, and hungry. The progressives are fragmented, disillusioned, and staying home.
If that continues, the next loss will not be a state election—it will be the entire Reformasi project itself. And when that happens, do not blame Anwar. Blame the mirror.
