The Gaza peace summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt, hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump, was a key diplomatic event.
Over 20 world leaders signed a ceasefire deal. Leaders such as Egypt’s Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, Qatar’s Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, Saudi Arabia’s Prince Faisal bin Farhan, Jordan’s King Abdullah II, and Pakistan’s Shehbaz Sharif were in attendance. The Arab League backed it too. Interestingly, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto was there, standing shoulder to shoulder with Donald Trump.
Our beloved PMX did not get an invite. Despite all his grandstanding as Gaza’s self-proclaimed hero, Anwar earned nothing but a cold shoulder.
Why Prabowo and Not Anwar?
The Indonesian president supported Trump’s 20-point peace plan fully—without drama. This reflected Indonesia’s practical approach, including offers to help rebuild Gaza.
Malaysia, on the other hand, is all about showy gestures. The government donated over RM200 million of taxpayers' money to Palestine. Remember when we brought in 127 Palestinians for medical treatment, when they could have easily been treated in Egypt or Qatar? It backfired as a shallow humanitarian blunder. Our “esteemed guests” from Gaza soon began rioting at their holding centres. Public anger forced them to be sent back faster than anyone could say “Rohingya”.
Then there’s the Education Ministry's push in 2023 for a “Palestine Solidarity Week” in schools where children used toy guns to stir up their embedded hatred of Jews. Now, there are calls for a Palestine syllabus in schools. This is nothing but indoctrination dressed up as “empathy” lessons. And the flotilla? Malaysia joined an exercise in futility. No aid reached Gaza but our heroes got their fifteen minutes of fame.
The peace talks needed diplomats, not drama queens. They needed peacemakers, not preachers crying, “Death to Israel! Death to America!” The world knows the difference between real leadership and empty rhetoric. You cannot hug terrorist leaders for photo ops and refuse to condemn the savage October 7 massacre, and still expect a seat at the peace table. It is moral blindness and hypocrisy to be outraged at the war in Gaza, yet remain silent about the massacres happening daily in Yemen, Sudan, Syria, and Nigeria. No protests. No boycotts. No flotillas. Somehow, when it comes to Israel, the hatred boils over.
President Prabowo spoke as a statesman for peace, not just for Palestine but for Israel too. He raised eyebrows at the UN when he called for guarantees of security for Israel from terrorist attacks. He gets it. He is able to see both sides of the conflict, while Malaysia tries to act “more Palestinian than the Palestinians”. While even Hamas agreed to the deal, Anwar gave speeches suggesting that he accepted it, but only “conditionally”. Major players like Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Jordan, and Pakistan all backed the plan. Anwar’s gaslighting as a hero only impressed our local “katak di bawah tempurung” crowd with their antisemitic propaganda.
So while Prabowo discussed solutions in Cairo with other world leaders, Anwar stayed home polishing his next speech to the gallery—wondering why the phone never rang.
