SEVERAL opposition parties formed a “One United Democratic Opposition” in preparation for the 2028 national and local elections.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday, representatives of the Liberal Party, Akbayan Party-list, Katipunan ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino and Magdalo gathered in a caucus on Tuesday to “further strengthen coordination among ongoing initiatives and reinforce cooperation toward shared democratic goals.” The groups said the mandate is to secure a victory for the Filipino people.
“This is not about a single party or a single personality. It is about the unity of those who believe that democracy must be protected, institutions must be strengthened and government must be accountable to the people,” the groups said in a statement in Filipino.
“As plans for 2028 gradually take shape, it is clear that the most important objective is not the success of any one party or candidate, but the success of the people... The unity continues. One United Democratic Opposition. One goal. One stand. Let the people win,” they added.
The caucus was attended by former congressman and Liberal Party President Erin Tañada, Akbayan Party President Rafaela David, Katipunan ng Nagkakaisang Pilipino President Kerby Salazar, and former senator and Magdalo Chairman Antonio Trillanes IV.
Trillanes and Akbayan had earlier endorsed the possible presidential bid of Sen. Risa Hontiveros for 2028.
This caucus aimed to “strengthen coordination on ongoing initiatives and cooperation on shared democratic objectives.”
“While our approaches to strengthening our movement and preparing for the future may vary, we are united by one purpose: to win for the Filipino people,” Akbayan said.
