Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Honorary Members’ Association of the People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) President Datuk Jerry Ambuting Mohd Said reminded all disaster responders and utility staff to prioritise safety while carrying out flood and landslide operations.

He expressed sympathy for victims of the disaster across the state, including a Sabah Electricity Sdn Bhd worker who was swept away by currents while on duty in Keningau on Tuesday night.

“Human life is the priority. Rescue teams and volunteers must be vigilant and avoid taking excessive risks in unpredictable weather,” he said.

Jerry also urged victims at temporary evacuation centres (PPS) to remain patient and comply with evacuation orders issued by authorities for their safety.

Jerry criticised opposition leaders for using water and power supply disruptions caused by the disaster to attack the State Government, saying the focus should be on saving lives, assisting victims and restoring essential services.

He said the State Government under Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor had shown strong commitment by visiting affected areas, monitoring conditions and providing immediate aid.

In Tuesday’s incident at Kampung Nuntunan, Apin-Apin, Keningau, a man in his 30s, a Sabah Electricity staff member, went missing after being swept away while crossing a bridge with two colleagues. Two managed to escape, while the victim remains missing.

Search and rescue efforts involving the Fire and Rescue Department, police, Civil Defence Force and villagers are ongoing.

Sabah Electricity has confirmed the incident and appealed for prayers for the victim’s safety while asking the public to respect the family’s privacy.
