KOTA KINABALU: Public concern has grown following the appearance of online products using the name and image of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir, whose recent passing drew national attention.

Many Malaysians say it is deeply inappropriate to profit from the tragedy of a child, describing the sales as insensitive and disrespectful.

Items such as flags, posters, stickers and T-shirts bearing Zara’s name, likeness and hashtags like #JusticeForZara have been listed on popular online shopping platforms.

On social media, Malaysians voiced disapproval, arguing that such sales exploit grief instead of focusing on genuine calls for justice.

One Threads user wrote that seeking justice should never be turned into personal gain, stressing that exploiting a tragedy for content or profit crosses moral boundaries.

Another user questioned whether the proceeds were reaching Zara’s family, while others expressed unease at the growing trend of commercialising public sympathy.

Many social media users urged sellers not to cross further lines of insensitivity.
