Kota Kinabalu: More than 1,000 participants from all walks of life took part in the Dementia Fun Run 2025 here on Sunday, showing solidarity and compassion for people living with dementia and their caregivers.
Sabah Alzheimer Disease Association (Sabah AZ) President and Malaysian Professional Women’s Secretariat Deputy Chairperson Dr Fatimah Sabrina Mohammad said the large turnout reflected growing public awareness and empathy towards those affected by the condition.
“This event is more than just a run, it is a movement of empathy, awareness, and hope. Seeing so many people come together reminds us that dementia is not just a medical issue but a community responsibility,” she said.
Dr Fatimah said partnerships between government agencies, hospitals, NGOs and private organisations demonstrated how collective action can strengthen advocacy and support networks for the dementia community.
Meanwhile, the organisers said the event successfully promoted both physical activity and inclusivity while deepening public understanding of dementia.
Sabah AZ said they were “overwhelmed and deeply encouraged” by the participation and enthusiasm shown, adding that they hope to make the Dementia Fun Run an annual event to continue raising awareness and building support for dementia care across Sabah.
Jointly organised by Sabah AZ, CRC, Hospital Queen Elizabeth, Geriatric Unit Hospital Mesra Bukit Padang, Sabah Health Department (JKNS), MPMS, Lions Club, and several corporate partners, the event aimed to promote awareness and inclusiveness within the community.
Participants dressed in purple T-shirts symbolising hope and care included children, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and individuals living with dementia.
The fun run also featured health screening booths, memory games, and information counters on early detection and dementia care.
