Kota Kinabalu: Road safety remains a major concern in the city, with 1,644 accidents recorded this year, resulting in 15 fatalities.

“Motorcyclists make up a majority of those involved,” said Kota Kinabalu Police Chief ACP Kasim Muda during the launch of the “Op Selamat Rumah, Selamat Sampai Ke Destinasi” campaign on Wednesday.

He said most of the fatal accidents occurred along Jalan Sepanggar and Jalan Tuaran Bypass, and the main causes were speeding and careless driving.

“Common traffic offences committed include overtaking in queues, using mobile phones while driving, running red lights, overtaking on double lines and obstructing traffic,” he added, noting that 90pc of those who died in the accidents did not possess valid driving licences.

He also said unauthorised vehicle modifications for both cars and motorcycles became more widespread, even causing incidents such as vehicle fires.

Kasim urged the public, especially those travelling back to their hometowns, to drive carefully and obey traffic rules, as well as to ensure they are calm, healthy and well-rested.

“If you feel tired during long journeys, especially when travelling far, stop and rest at designated safe areas. Do not stop at unsafe locations,” he stressed.

Additionally, he encouraged those leaving their homes for the holidays to inform the nearest police station of their absence. If they are unable to visit the station in person, they may use the Voluntary Smartphone Patrol (VSP) application on their smartphones.

“We have five officers and 43 personnel assigned throughout the operation from the Traffic Division.

“Police stations have also arranged patrol duties in residential areas together with MPV units, URB and sector personnel,” he said.

He also said the police force is operating at near full capacity, demonstrating a strong commitment to ensuring safety during the upcoming festive period.

Meanwhile, the city recorded a 16pc reduction in crime cases compared to the previous year, signalling a positive trend in public safety.

“As of the latest data, total reported cases dropped from 275 last year to 230 this year, with a decrease of 45 cases,” he said.

The launch also saw the distribution of goodie bags to motorists along Jalan Lintas by members of the police and Amanita (Aman Wanita) unit, as well as Petronas staff.
