Kota Kinabalu: About 300 higher education students will take part in the State-level Malaysia Day celebration at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC) on Sept 16, aimed at instilling a deeper appreciation of the nation's history and independence among youth.
State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Jafry Ariffin, in a press conference on Monday, said the students will form the Suara Hari Malaysia group to stage a special performance during the event, which is expected to draw at least 3,000 people.
The celebration, to be officiated by the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Sabah and held simultaneously with the national-level event in Kuching, Sarawak, was moved from Padang Merdeka to SICC due to unpredictable weather and for better crowd control.
Organisers confirmed there will be no road closures around the venue, though security authorities will manage traffic flow ahead of the 8pm programme.
Meanwhile, Jafry reiterated Sabah’s demand for one-third parliamentary representation for Sabah and Sarawak as provided under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63), stressing it should be implemented accordingly and not viewed as a political party issue.
