KOTA KINABALU (June 16): Centre Point Sabah, in collaboration with Pacific Advance Cleaning Sdn Bhd, will be organizing the highly anticipated KK Beach Cleaning Day on July 5 at Teluk Likas Awam II, Tanjung Lipat, from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm.

A total of 350 registered volunteers will take part in this large-scale cleanup effort, united in a mission to remove waste and promote environmental awareness.

This event, supported by Kota Kinabalu City Hall (DBKK) and WWF-Malaysia, goes beyond a standard cleanup — organizers are aiming for a record-breaking collection of trash, making it the largest single-day beach cleanup effort ever recorded in Sabah.

Volunteers will be grouped into teams of 15 to 20, each allocated two hours to collect litter such as plastic bottles, packaging, fishing gear and general debris. The collected waste will be weighed under DBKK supervision, and the team with the heaviest haul will be declared the winner.

All slots were quickly filled after the event was announced on Centre Point Sabah’s official Facebook page on May 28, reflecting the strong enthusiasm and growing environmental consciousness among Sabahans.

To reward their dedication, Centre Point Sabah will present RM5,000 for the champion team, RM3,000 for second place and RM2,000 for third place.

All participants will also receive an official e-certificate of participation as a token of appreciation.

“This event is more than just about picking up trash,” said Meredith Madani, public relations executive for Centre Point Sabah. “It’s about igniting a sense of responsibility and pride in keeping our environment clean. We want to inspire communities to take real action — and together, create a historic impact for Sabah.”

Dr Rebecca Jumin, Head of Conservation, Sabah at WWF-Malaysia, echoed this sentiment:

“Our core vision at WWF-Malaysia is to reverse the decline of nature, which includes ensuring our natural spaces remain clean. WWF advocates for the reduction and elimination of single-use plastic and the prevention of leakage into nature. We’re proud to partner with Centre Point Sabah in this meaningful initiative.”

KK Beach Cleaning Day 2025 also highlights the power of collaboration between public institutions, the private sector, and civil society in addressing pressing environmental issues. Organizers hope this event will influence long-term attitudes and behaviors towards waste and sustainability.

With the rallying hashtag #SeaYaLaterTrash, this initiative is set to leave a lasting impact — not only on the beach but in the hearts of every participant.
