THE number of flood victims housed in temporary evacuation centres in Perak, Penang and Kedah has surged to 5,806 this morning, up from 4,743 reported last night, as heavy rainfall continues to affect large parts of northern Malaysia.
In Perak, 2,922 people from 993 families in the districts of Larut Matang Selama, Manjung, Kerian and Perak Tengah are currently displaced, compared with 2,806 individuals from 955 families recorded last night.
According to the Perak State Disaster Management Committee (JPBN), an additional evacuation centre has been opened, bringing the total number of operational centres in the state to 26.
Penang has also seen an increase in evacuees, with 1,026 people from 279 families now sheltered across seven centres, up from 928 people from 252 families previously.
The centres are located in three districts: Seberang Perai Utara (four centres), Seberang Perai Tengah (two centres) and Barat Daya on the island (one centre).
“The district of Seberang Perai Utara has the highest number of evacuees, with 778 people from 212 families housed at SK Lahar Yooi, Sekolah Agama Rakyat Nyior Sebatang, Pusat Penempatan Banjir Labuh Banting and SK Padang Menora,” according to the Department of Social Welfare’s disaster information website.
In Kedah, flood victims now total 1,858 people from 587 families, compared with 1,009 from 312 families last night. Six new evacuation centres have been opened, bringing the state’s total to 14 centres. Pokok Sena and Baling are the latest districts affected.
“Four centres have been opened in Baling – SK Siong, SK Seri Bayu, Dewan Tun Abdul Razak (Lama) and Kompleks Belia dan Sukan – accommodating 251 people from 88 families. In Pokok Sena, one centre at Dewan Serbaguna houses 85 people from 26 families,” JPBN Kedah said.
Kulim district has recorded the highest number of evacuees in the state, with 1,470 people from 449 families in eight centres, including Surau Taman Sang Kancil, Dewan Kampung Paya Tok Betok, Sekolah Menengah Agama Insaniah Jangkang and SJKC Khai Min. Kuala Muda’s SJKC Chong Cheng hosts 52 people from 24 families.
Meanwhile, the Public Infobanjir website has issued a flood warning for Langkawi, affecting low-lying areas within a five-kilometre radius of Sungai Melaka and Kampung Padang Mat Sirat between 4am and 6pm today.
Four rivers in Kedah have exceeded danger levels: Sungai Pendang in Pendang (3.26m), Sungai Chepir in Sik (36.7m), Sungai Ketil in Kampung Bongor, Baling (60.8m) and Sungai Titi Kerbau in Pendang (7m). Two others remain at alert levels: Sungai Nawa in Pokok Sena (9.97m) and Sungai Anak Bukit in Taman Aman, Kota Setar (2.1m). - October 25, 2025
