‘P100M Davao flood control project to be finished soon’

THE Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) has nearly completed emergency flood control work along the Talomo River in Barangay Bangkal, Davao City, following the destructive flooding that hit the community on July 24, Secretary Vince Dizon said on Tuesday.

The DPWH allocated P100 million from its Quick Response Fund for the project, which is expected to be completed before the end of the year.

“After two months, we would be done and hopefully even before that period,” Dizon said.

The July 24 flooding occurred after heavy rain in the upland areas sent a sudden surge of water into the community, although there was very little rain in Davao City, the DPWH chief said.

The rising water overwhelmed portions of the flood protection, damaging homes and displacing residents, Dizon said.

The DPWH raised the flood protection structure and dredged the river to increase its capacity to hold water before it could overflow.

The agency also plans to raise a bridge in the area to the same level as the new flood protection structure.

However, the work will have to be coordinated with the Davao Water District because of a water pipe located in the area, Dizon said.
