MANILA, Philippines — House Assistant Majority Leader and Lanao del Sur Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong has filed a bill seeking a P15 billion supplemental appropriations for Fiscal Year 2026 to support urgent relief, recovery, rehabilitation, repair, and reconstruction efforts in communities devastated by the magnitude 7.8 earthquake that struck offshore near Sarangani Province on June 8, 2026.
Under his House Bill 9887, the additional budget would augment the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Fund to address the widespread destruction across Regions XI and XII, including severe damage to homes, schools, hospitals, roads, bridges, irrigation systems, power facilities, ports, airports, and other critical infrastructure.
It would also provide direct assistance to displaced families, farmers, fisherfolk, and vulnerable sectors whose livelihoods were disrupted.
In a statement, Adiong said that Mindanao residents need immediate help from one of the strongest earthquakes in recent memory.
"Our people need immediate help to rebuild their lives, restore essential services, and recover their livelihoods. This bill delivers the substantial resources required to accelerate relief and long-term rehabilitation," Adiong said.
He added that as a Mindanaoan, he felt for his brothers and sisters across the regions who are struggling to pick up the pieces after the tragedy.
"We must stand with them and give them the support they urgently need," Adiong said.
Under his proposal. P2 billion each will be allocated to the Department of Agriculture for irrigation system repairs and direct assistance to farmers and fisherfolk, and to the Department of Education for the repair and rehabilitation of damaged schools.
P1.5 billion each will be given to the Department of Social Welfare and Development for emergency cash aid, food packs, and temporary shelter, and to the Department of Health for hospital repairs, medical equipment, and local health facilities.
Another P2 billion will be provided for Housing assistance and relocation through the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development and the National Housing Authority.
Substantial fulding will also support the Department of Public Works and Highways and local government units for roads, bridges, and community infrastructure, along with allocations for power restoration, state universities and colleges, and transport facilities.
The quake has claimed 47 deaths, 688 injuries and 31 person remaining missing, with 45,000 individuals remain displaced and 12,600 homes damaged.
