In a first of a kind, a Pahadi Kavi Sammelan was held at the historic Gaiety Theatre here as a part of the ongoing International Shimla Summer Festival-2026, during which eminent litterateurs, poets and literature enthusiasts recited their works.
Poets mesmerised the audience by reciting their poems in the Pahari language. The poems prominently featured themes such as folk culture, rural life, environmental protection, social unity and human sensibilities. The audience applauded and encouraged the poets’ performances.
Shimla DC Anupam Kashyap, who was the chief guest on the occasion, said that this new initiative by the district administration aims to preserve and enhance Himachal Pradesh’s rich cultural and literary heritage.
“Pahari language and literature are an integral part of our identity and it is our collective responsibility to pass them on to the future generations,” he added.
He said that the poems which were recited by poets from various regions of the state reflected Himachal’s culture, folk life, traditions and social values.
“The district administration will compile these Pahari poems and will publish them in a book in the future. This book will be made available in all libraries across the state so that more people can connect with Pahari literature and become familiar with its rich tradition,” added Kashyap.
Highlighting the importance of literature, the DC said that literature is a mirror of society, and writers work to give society a new direction.
“Writers play a vital role in promoting culture and developing social consciousness. The contribution of writers in building the society and bringing positive change can never be forgotten. This event not only proved to be an important platform for promoting Pahari language and literature, but also provided an opportunity for the state’s writers and youth to showcase their creative talents,” he said.
