Pahang police reject claims of drug cartel operating in Genting Highlands

PAHANG police have dismissed claims circulating on social media that a major drug cartel is operating in Genting Highlands, Bentong, with no enforcement action taken against it.

Acting state police chief Datuk Azry Akmar Ayob said police would act on any criminal offence reported to them, regardless of where it occurred.

“If there is a police report involving an offence, whether in Genting Highlands or anywhere else, we will investigate and take the appropriate action,” he told reporters after the handover ceremony for the Pahang Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department (JPJKK)  today.

He was responding to claims that a large drug cartel was operating in Genting Highlands.

Azry said he disagreed with the suggestion that police had failed to take action.

“I deny that there is a major drug cartel operating in Genting Highlands,” he said.

Meanwhile, Senior Assistant Commissioner Ahmad Sukarno Mohd Zahar has taken over as the new Pahang JPJKK chief, replacing Datuk Mohamad Noor Yusof Ali, who has been appointed as the Royal Malaysia Police secretary.

Ahmad Sukarno, formerly with the Bukit Aman JPJKK secretariat, took over from Acting Pahang JPJKK chief Assistant Commissioner Muhammed Rizal Kamarudin.

Azry said Ahmad Sukarno’s more than three decades in the police force had given him the experience and knowledge needed to lead the department.

He said he expected Ahmad Sukarno to continue the work of the previous leadership while bringing in new approaches to strengthen crime prevention and community safety efforts in Pahang. – August 17, 2026
