British singer Dua Lipa's wedding with actor Callum Turner in Palermo was attracting growing opposition from residents on Friday as celebrities descended on the Sicilian city.
Lipa, 30, and Turner, 36, are staying at a luxury hotel in the city for the three-day celebrations.
Guests expected to attend include pop stars Elton John and Charli XCX as well as fashion designer Donatella Versace.
Posters and stickers opposing the celebrity influx have popped up across the city, carrying slogans such as "Palermo is not for rent" and "Our piazza is not your living room."
Behind the protests is a citizens’ initiative called Apro Palermo (Open Palermo), which also campaigns against mass tourism.
The city of 630,000 inhabitants is not known for celebrity weddings – unlike Venice, for example.
The couple have already been spotted on the terrace of the five-star Villa Igiea hotel, where they are said to have checked into a suite measuring over 100 square metres.
According to newspaper reports, the celebrations are to take place at various locations in Palermo and the neighbouring town of Bagheria, with more than 200 guests expected.
Dua Lipa, known for hits such as "Don’t Start Now" and "Houdini," and Turner, an actor who has appeared in films such as "Emma" and "Fantastic Beasts," have been a couple since January 2024. They announced their engagement last summer.
The official wedding is said to have taken place on Sunday in a small ceremony at the old town hall in the London borough of Marylebone. The singer has since posted a photo on Instagram showing the happy couple as they emerged.
