At least nine people have been killed in new Israeli airstrikes on Gaza City, according to Palestinian sources.

"Nine Palestinians were killed and 15 others wounded in Israeli airstrikes that targeted four residential apartments in Gaza City early Thursday morning," the Palestinian news agency WAFA reported.

A 9-year-old girl was among the injured, WAFA reported.

An Israeli army spokesman said on request that the reports were being examined.

A ceasefire in the Gaza Strip has officially been in place since October, but Israeli strikes and armed incidents continue to occur regularly.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu recently announced plans to expand military control over the Gaza Strip from the current 60% to 70% of the territory. When the US-brokered ceasefire came into force, Israel controlled 53% of the coastal strip.

The second phase of the peace plan initiated by US President Donald Trump calls for the disarmament of the Palestinian Islamist organization Hamas and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli troops. This is to be followed by the reconstruction of the Palestinian territory, which was heavily destroyed in the war.

Hamas, however, rejects disarmament and has been able to consolidate its rule in the areas still under its control since the ceasefire began.

High Representative for Gaza Nickolay Mladenov said last month that reconstruction of the Gaza Strip was not possible without the disarmament of Hamas.
