SEMPORNA: One person seriously hurt while four others suffered minor injuries, another person with heart problems and another escaped unharmed in a three-vehicles crash at Simpang 4 Kalumpang, Jalan Semporna-Tawau, here, on Saturday.
It was learnt that the accident is believed to have occurred after a load of oil palm fruit carried by a lorry fell onto the road, prompting all three vehicles to swerve to avoid the fruits that scattered across the road.
The State Fire and Rescue Department said the department received a distress call following the road accidents at 9.52am and deployed a team of Fire and Rescue personnel from the Semporna Fire and Rescue Station.
Upon arrival, the commander of the operation reported that an accident occurred involving an Isuzu D-Max, Toyota Hilux and Toyota Avanza.
Four women and three men were involved in accidents with all women suffered minor injuries. One of the male victims suffered heart problems, while another was trapped inside the vehicle and another man escaped unhurt.
The EMRS team provided initial treatment to the male victim who was trapped inside the vehicle and suffered serious injuries. The man was later taken to Semporna Hospital.
The victim with heart problem was taken to Tawau Hospital by Ambulance for further action while four other victims were taken to Semporna Hospital for treatment.
“A clean-up operation was carried out to remove oil residue, oil palm fruits and broken glass from the road surface using a hose reel and foam.
“The operation ended at 12.36pm after the team made sure there was no other danger at the scene,” the department added.
Meanwhile, in Tambunan four people were injured after two vehicles collided in front of the Tambunan Complex here on Friday night.
The Sabah Fire and Rescue Department Operations Centre received an emergency call about the accident at 8.24pm through the Tambunan Fire and Rescue Station (BBP).
The accident involved a Perodua Kembara and a Perodua Kelisa, which collided while travelling in opposite directions.
An initial inspection found that none of the victims was trapped in the vehicles, as members of the public had removed all of them before the arrival of the fire and rescue team.
The Kembara driver sustained a head injury, while two passengers in the other vehicle suffered a broken leg and minor injuries respectively.
