A suspected drone found in the playground of a government school in Haripur village here on Tuesday evening triggered panic among residents, who feared it was a spying device or an object of unidentified origin.
The drone was found at the school playground around 7.30 pm on Tuesday. Village sarpanch Nirmal Ram said some children playing in the school noticed a suspicious drone landing near them. The children picked up the device and took it to village elders, who immediately informed the Adampur police.
Acting promptly, a police team led by DSP Rajeev Kumar and SHO Ravinder Kumar reached the spot. The drone was taken into police custody and a detailed investigation was launched.
As residents demanded a thorough probe into whether the drone posed a threat, officials urged them not to panic.
On Wednesday, police officials clarified that the drone was an Indian Army device used for testing and there was no cause for concern.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, police said: “News is being circulated on social media claiming that a drone was found in the premises of a government school in Adampur, Jalandhar. DSP Adampur and SHO Adampur visited the spot and verified the facts. It was found that the object was a drone being operated by Army personnel for testing purposes. Due to it going out of operational range, the drone inadvertently landed in the school premises. No suspicious activity has been found to be associated with the incident. The matter was verified on the spot, and there is no cause for concern among the public.”
DSP Adampur Rajeev Kumar, addressing reporters, said: “After we received information about the drone last evening, SHO Ravinder Kumar and I inspected the school and took the drone in for verification. Army personnel present at the spot informed the police that the drone belonged to them. It was being used for a test by an Army unit during a workshop and had strayed out of range. This was also confirmed by a senior official. Therefore, there is no cause for concern.”
