KUALA LUMPUR — Fresh from winning his fourth consecutive world title, Malaysia’s para powerlifting hero Bonnie Bunyau Gustin had another reason to celebrate — his marriage.

The 26-year-old from Serian, Sarawak, shared the joyful news on Instagram yesterday, posting pre-wedding photos alongside a heartfelt message that read: “God didn’t just give me someone to love — He gave me someone to grow with, pray with, and walk beside.”

While details of the ceremony were not disclosed, the announcement was met with an outpouring of love and congratulations from fellow athletes and fans across the country.

Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh wrote, “Congratulations Mr & Mrs Bonnie Bunyau,” while Olympic diver Datuk Pandelela Rinong and squash legend Datuk Nicol David also sent their well wishes.

Paralympic shot putter Ziyad Zolkefli commented, “Congratulations my brother,” and badminton star Cheah Liek Hou chimed in with, “Power bossku. Congratulations bossku.”

The wedding announcement came just days after Bonnie’s latest triumph at the 2025 World Para Powerlifting Championships in Cairo, where he lifted 230kg to secure gold in the men’s under-72kg category — extending his reign as world champion.

Bonnie has long been a symbol of strength and humility in Malaysian sport. He made history at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics by winning the country’s first-ever gold medal in powerlifting and repeated the feat at the 2024 Paris Games.

His achievements have earned him multiple accolades, including three National Paralympic Sportsman of the Year awards — in 2021, 2023, and 2024.

Now, as Malaysia’s most decorated para powerlifter begins a new chapter in his personal life, many have praised him not only for his sporting excellence but also for his grounded faith and quiet perseverance.

For a nation that has watched him lift both barbells and spirits, Bonnie’s message of love and gratitude struck a familiar chord — a reminder that even champions find strength not only in competition, but in companionship. — October 19, 2025
