Paraguay captain Gustavo Gómez says his side will put in a combative display during the World Cup last-32 match against Germany on Monday.

After a 4-1 opening defeat against co-hosts the US, coach Gustavo Alfaro's team kept two clean sheets - including in the 1-0 win against Turkey despite playing with a man down for a full half.

"In the three matches - regardless of the results - we have shown that we can fight well," Gómez said. "It will be no different tomorrow. That is our identity."

Earlier, Gómez posted a rallying cry on social media for the game in Foxborough.

"We are back to compete, and we will fight until the end. We have brought Paraguay to the world stage!" the 33-year-old wrote on Instagram. "It is not over yet."

Their only previous match against Germany at the tournament was in 2002, with Germany claiming a late 1-0 victory in the round of 16.

"When we look back, only we know the difficulties we overcame along the way. It were hard years, but today we are here and fighting with our soul to keep our country’s name at the top," Gómez added.

If a Paraguayan believes, nothing is impossible, he said, concluding on Instagram: "TOGETHER WE ARE STRONGER!"

For Alfaro, Germany are among the title favourites

"We have to be aware of what we have here," he said. "Playing Germany is of course a big challenge but we will give everything on the pitch. We are playing a difficult opponent, one that I believe are among the favourites for the World Cup."

Paraguay are at the World Cup for the first time since 2010, when they reached the last eight - their best finish. This time they made the knock-outs as one of the eight best third-placed teams.

"Nobody would have thought that Paraguay would make it to the World Cup," Alfaro said.
