A 31-year-old single mother from China was left paralysed from the waist down after a car crash in 2013 and has been using a wheelchair ever since.

While going through rehabilitation, she met a man named Ding on social media who claimed to be a surgeon, saying he had studied medicine and even interned at a hospital.

“I thought my life was finally turning around”

According to the South China Morning Post, Ding began pursuing Li during their time together, and the two quickly fell in love before eventually tying the knot.

After Li became pregnant, Ding promised her better medical care, claiming he had left his hospital job to start a business.

However, just two months into their marriage, Ding was detained by the police over an alleged rape but managed to secure his release by borrowing money from Li.

“When he proposed, he made me feel special. I truly believed my life was finally turning around,” Li shared.

He forced her to take a 3 million yuan loan

During her late pregnancy, Ding repeatedly asked her for money, claiming it was for his business. Whenever she refused, he would kick her out of the house.

She also said he pressured her into taking out a three-million-yuan (RM1,770,898) loan and frequently pushed and insulted her while she was pregnant.

“I realised my child and I were just pawns to him,” Li said.

The couple divorced the day after their baby was born, with Ding giving up custody. Shortly after, he disappeared and cut off all contact.

He was fired from his internship for sexual harassment

Later, Li discovered that Ding had never had a medical license or graduated from university. He had also been dismissed from his hospital internship for sexual harassment, resolving the issue by paying money.

She also revealed that his so-called business was fake and that he was drowning in debt, owing more than three million yuan.

Since then, she has been raising their son alone, supporting them both by live-streaming and selling food and household items. Although she can now stand, she is still unable to walk and continues to rely on a wheelchair.

Li has also filed a lawsuit against Ding over the loan, with the trial scheduled for June.
