Online debate erupts after a post about a child being struck during a meal ignites arguments over parental supervision and responsibility in public spaces.

A DISCUSSION over parental supervision has initiated heated debate online after a Threads user claimed their child was punched by another child while eating, with attention quickly shifting to concerns over distracted parenting.

The post described an incident involving another child who was reportedly autistic, stating that the user’s child was eating when he was suddenly struck in the chest, causing food to spill from his mouth.

“My child was eating when he was punched in the chest, causing food to fly out of his mouth,” the user wrote, adding that they did not blame the child involved but instead criticised the lack of supervision from the parent.

The user further alleged that the other child’s mother was occupied with TikTok on her phone at the time of the incident and only apologised after a report was made.

The post quickly drew responses from social media users, many of whom focused on parental responsibility in public spaces rather than the child’s condition.

One user questioned the circumstances, asking where the poster was at the time and why intervention was not made sooner.

Several parents of autistic children also joined the discussion, emphasising the importance of constant supervision when managing children with additional needs.

“My child is also autistic. Parents like these are the cause of people criticising autistic children. The child is not at fault,” one commenter wrote.

Another said caring for a special-needs child in public requires constant attention and mental preparedness, adding that some parents choose to remain at home if they feel unable to manage such situations.

Others broadened the discussion beyond autism, with some users arguing that diagnoses should not be used to excuse harmful behaviour in public settings.

A number of commenters shared personal experiences, including accounts of quickly intervening when their own children displayed aggressive or unsafe behaviour in public.

One user recalled chasing their autistic child after he attempted to hit another child with a toy, while another described rescuing their child from a swimming pool incident, claiming the supervising parent was distracted by a phone.
