After a rather divisive edition of the Summer Olympics held in the City of Light, it is now the turn for differently-abled Paralympians to take centre stage with the debut of the Paris Paralympic Games. Here is everything you need to know about watching it, and who will represent the Malaysian contingent during this year’s Paralympics.

Held from August 28th 2024 to September 8th 2024, the eleven-day sporting event will mark the first time that Paris has been chosen as the host city for the Paralympic Games. This will also mark France’s second time hosting the Paralympics since 1992, when the South-Eastern French commune of Tignes and Albertville were jointly tapped as hosts for the occasion.

First organised in 1960, the Summer Paralympic Games invite globally renowned Paralympians to participate in the world’s most prestigious athletics arena and is held just like the Summer Olympics once every four years. Athletes can quality and compete in all manner of sporting categories, from mainstream sports such as archery, badminton, cycling, and football, to niche disciplines including boccia, paracanoeing, and goalball.

The Paris Paralympics is expected to see a total turnout of 4,400 athletes selected by 184 National Paralympics Committees globally. Malaysia’s contingent will comprise 30 athletes competing in a total of 8 categories. Athletes include:

This will be the 11th time that Malaysia has participated in the Paralympics since making its debut during the 1972 games in Heidelberg, with a total medal count of 16.
