Over 40,000 spectators had the luxury of witnessing the grand opening ceremony of the Malaysia Games (SUKMA) Sarawak 2024 last night (August 17).
The luminous drones, laser beams of various colors, continuous drum beats, and skilled dancers graced the scene and amazed the audience. The performers also consisted of various ethnic groups, making the event feel closer to home.
Astro Arena shared a snippet of the colorful opening event on its X page, reminding the Paris Olympics to learn from SUKMA.
“Paris? Paris what? Paris should learn from the SUKMA Sarawak!”

Social media users were also mesmerised by the fantastic opening of SUKMA Sarawak 2024, with most of them highlighting that the opening of the Paris Olympics 2024 is nothing compared to this.
“Good job, Sarawak. The opening ceremony of the SUKMA is much better than the Paris Olympics.”
“There’s a reason why Sarawak is going all out this time. They’re targeting to be the co-host for the Sukan SEA in 2027 and aim to make Kuching the location for the opening ceremony. SUKMA is one of the ways for them to impress the Malaysian government and convince them that they deserve to host SEA Games,” said a user.
“Come on, France. This is how you do an opening ceremony, not by showing the LGBT elements, rockers, dirty water. I pity the swimmer who had to swim there,” commented another.
