A part-time driver was charged at the Ayer Keroh Magistrate’s Court here on five charges of trafficking over 569 kg of MDMA in March.

MELAKA: A part time driver was charged at the Ayer Keroh Magistrate’s Court here on five charges of trafficking over 569.36 kilogrammes (kg) 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA) in March.

The accused, Chai Koh Chun,55, only nodded in understanding when the charges were read to him in front of Magistrate Sharda Shienha Mohd Suleiman.

No plea was recorded as the case is under the jurisdiction of the High Court.

Under the first charge, the accused allegedly trafficked 269,382.78 grams (g) of MDMA, and he is accused of trafficking the same drug with a gross weight of 298,650.00 g under the second charge, while the remaining two charges relate to trafficking 176.42 g and 150.88 g of MDMA and 1,003.30 g of ketamine.

The offences allegedly took place at a house along Jalan Samarinda 5, Taman Satu Krubong, Krubong, in Melaka Tengah district around 4 pm on March 8.

The charges were submitted under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 punishable under Section 39B(2) of the same Act, which carries the death penalty or life imprisonment and no less than 12 lashes if convicted.

Deputy public prosecutor Syaza Nur Sharif who led the prosecution, did not offer any bail, while lawyers S Paul Krishnaraja and Chua Yong Yi represented the accused.

The court did not allow bail and set June 18 for the submission of the chemicals report.
