PKR Youth Leader Dr. Taufiq Johari has raised a critical question on the glaring silence of PAS president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang and his deputy, Dato' Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man, following recent allegations of defamation within the party as reported in Free Malaysia Today.
The Sungai Petani MP expressed concern over the hypocrisy within PAS, especially when its leaders engage in slander while party heads remain notably absent in addressing such misconduct while emphasizing about forgiveness.
The issue centers around PAS's Perak chief, Razman Zakaria, who has been accused of defaming Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh. Razman allegedly linked Yeoh to the YTL Corporation Bhd, calling her the “daughter of a rich man” and making further defamatory statements. Despite an apology issued by Razman, Yeoh has confirmed she will be serving him a letter of demand for his false claims.
Taufiq Johari was sharp to point out the silence from PAS's leadership on this matter, questioning whether repeated defamation could truly be seen as an honest mistake. His comments suggest that PAS's commitment to religious values is being undermined by their leaders' failure to take responsibility for such actions. He emphasized that PAS's ulama (religious scholars) should not allow this behavior to go unchecked, calling on them to stand up against hypocrisy within the party.
Furthermore, Taufiq pointed to a troubling pattern, noting that a previous PAS leader, Siti Mastura Muhammad, was found guilty of defaming DAP leaders and ordered to pay a substantial fine. He questioned how a party that positions itself as a defender of religious values can allow such actions to persist without any reprimand or accountability.
Taufiq's call for integrity within PAS challenges the notion that the party should be above criticism, especially when its leaders are implicated in defamatory practices. He concluded with a firm stance that such hypocrisy should not be normalized in any political party, particularly one that claims to uphold religious values.
