PAS has expressed regret over the public circulation of a letter linked to former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, signalling unease within Perikatan Nasional (PN) as internal discussions on the coalition’s future leadership continue.
PAS secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan said on January 28, 2026, that the party had not agreed to all the proposals outlined in the letter, which was addressed to the presidents of PN’s component parties and began circulating widely earlier in the week. The contents reportedly touched on major structural changes within the coalition, including the establishment of a PN Presidential Council and the removal of the position of PN chairman.
Takiyuddin indicated that PAS viewed the spread of the letter as unfortunate, particularly as consensus had not been reached on several of the ideas raised. He stressed that PAS would formally communicate its position to the presidents of PN member parties in writing, allowing the matter to be considered collectively and through proper channels.
The clarification came amid reports that a PN Supreme Council meeting scheduled for Thursday had been called off. Instead, leaders from the coalition’s four main component parties were expected to convene at Muhyiddin’s residence for what was described as a preliminary discussion. The smaller gathering was understood to be aimed at setting the direction of the coalition before any formal Supreme Council session is held.
Political sources indicated that the postponed Supreme Council meeting was originally expected to address key leadership questions, including the confirmation of Muhyiddin’s resignation as PN chairman and the appointment of his successor. Muhyiddin had earlier announced that his resignation from the post would take effect on January 1, 2026.
Takiyuddin also noted that the cancelled meeting agenda did not include Muhyiddin’s name, reflecting his decision to step down. In addition, the names of PN secretary-general Datuk Seri Mohamed Azmin Ali and PN information chief Datuk Dr Mohd Radzi Jidin were also absent, as both had previously submitted their resignations from their respective positions.
The unfolding developments have highlighted growing sensitivities within PN as it navigates leadership transitions and debates over its organisational structure. PAS’s move to formally state its stance suggests that not all component parties are aligned on the proposed changes, underscoring the need for clearer internal consultation.
