PAS has rejected speculation that it is preparing to contest the 16th General Election (GE16) on its own, stressing that the party remains firmly committed to strengthening its alliance within the Perikatan Nasional (PN) coalition.
Terengganu Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Samsuri Mokhtar said PAS’ top leadership has made its position clear, with the current priority being to reinforce cooperation and unity among PN component parties. According to him, the party is fully aware of Malaysia’s present political landscape and sees coalition solidarity as essential moving forward.
Speaking on February 4, 2026, Ahmad Samsuri explained that there has been no discussion or consideration of PAS breaking away from PN to chart a solo path. Instead, he said the party continues to stand by its commitment to the coalition, viewing internal strengthening as the most important task at this stage.
Addressing reports of leadership tensions within PN, Ahmad Samsuri, who also serves as PAS vice-president, expressed confidence that the matter would eventually be resolved through discussions at the PN Supreme Council level. He indicated that such issues are part of coalition dynamics and should be settled through formal channels, although he noted that he was unaware of the exact timing of the next Supreme Council meeting.
He also downplayed rumours suggesting that certain individuals, including himself, were being considered for top leadership roles within PN, such as the position of chairman. Ahmad Samsuri said he had no information on such claims and clarified that he was not involved in recent decision-making meetings related to the matter. Any outcome, he added, would only be known once official meetings are convened and decisions are announced.
Earlier reports had indicated that several PN leaders held a gathering at the residence of Bersatu president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin following the last-minute cancellation of a PN Supreme Council special meeting. That meeting was reportedly called off by PN deputy secretary-general Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan. Notably, no PAS representatives, including party president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang, were present at the gathering.
At the same time, PAS was engaged in a three-day internal retreat that began on January 31, 2026. The retreat was widely believed to have focused on the party’s strategic direction, including its cooperation with PN partners and preparations for upcoming state elections as well as GE16.
