According to Ahmad Fadhli Shaari, the PAS information chief, there is no assurance that Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul will allow a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to be presented.
He cited previous instances where motions tabled by Perikatan Nasional (PN) MPs, including one seeking clarification on the conditional discharge of Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, were outright rejected in the Dewan Rakyat.
The Pasir Mas MP emphasized that based on past experiences, there is no guarantee that a no-confidence motion will be accepted and voted upon. These remarks were made in response to Anwar's recent statement, where he claimed that PN had not filed a no-confidence motion against him despite persistent rumours of the unity government's impending collapse. Anwar further stated that PN lacks the necessary numbers to ensure the success of a no-confidence motion in the Dewan Rakyat.
Interestingly, the prime minister himself had previously expressed his willingness to accept a no-confidence motion against him, even suggesting that he would reduce the notice period required. In December 2022, one month after the 15th general election (GE15), a motion of confidence in Anwar's administration was introduced by Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof and passed through a voice vote, with the opposition refraining from calling for a bloc vote.
Commenting on the situation, Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim challenged the opposition to file a no-confidence motion if they wished to test Anwar's legitimacy as the prime minister. However, scholars like Noor Nirwandy Mat Noordin from UiTM and Kartini Aboo from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) expressed their concerns regarding the ongoing political discourse surrounding attempts to topple the government.
They argue that such rhetoric only serves to undermine public confidence in the country's political system. The term "Dubai Move" has also emerged in discussions, referring to alleged talks in the United Arab Emirates between certain opposition leaders and government representatives with the aim of destabilizing the unity government.
This has contributed to the negative atmosphere surrounding the political landscape. In conclusion, the opposition leader's statement highlights the uncertainty surrounding the acceptance of a no-confidence motion against Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim by the Dewan Rakyat Speaker.
Based on previous rejections of motions, there is no guarantee that such a motion will be permitted or put to a vote. The issue of a no-confidence motion and the political manoeuvring surrounding it continue to generate concerns about the stability of the government and the erosion of public trust in the country's political system.
