KUALA LUMPUR – The Selangor Pas Youth Wing has urged the government and relevant agencies to take proactive measures to address rising electricity bills, saying the issue is adding to the financial pressures faced by Malaysians.
Its deputy chief Muhammad Faizzuddin Mohd Zai said the group was appealing to the government, Energy Commission (ST), Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB) and other relevant agencies to listen to public concerns over high electricity bills.
He acknowledged the challenges facing the electricity sector, including global fuel costs, generation, transmission and distribution expenses, as well as increasingly demanding system operations amid the ongoing global crisis.
However, Faizzuddin said these challenges should not prevent the government and relevant parties from taking measures beyond the norm to assist Malaysians affected by soaring electricity bills and the wider cost-of-living pressures.
“Almost every Malaysian household uses electricity, and if this issue is not given due attention and managed effectively by the government, the people will be burdened,” he said in a statement.
He described the matter as critical and called for the government to sit down with relevant agencies and stakeholders to ensure the welfare and interests of the people are protected.
Faizzuddin said Malaysians wanted to see greater commitment from those responsible to reduce the cost of living, including measures to ensure that the “super-rich” benefiting from the industry reduce the scale of their profits.
He also called for more creative policies and measures that would not place additional burdens on the public.
The Selangor Pas Youth Wing further urged the government to ensure the country's electricity supply system is managed more efficiently.
It said every ringgit included in the costs borne by consumers must be reasonable, while public interests should take priority over those of the industry or global capitalists profiting from the country's energy resources.
