KOTA BHARU – Pas and Umno are considering retaining seats for the incumbent party as part of efforts to avoid contesting each other in the Melaka state election.
Pas deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said the matter was among the principles that needed to be considered if both parties reached an agreement during negotiations over seat allocations.
“When there is an agreement, there are several things that need to be prioritised, including retaining the incumbent with the winning party. That is the principle, including in Melaka.
“In some states, for example Terengganu, Kedah and Perlis, Umno does not have any incumbent seats. So, in states like these, I think there are other mechanisms that need to be discussed,” he said during during a press conference after officiating the 67th Pas Youth Wing Muktamar here today.
He said for the Melaka state election, Pas has a Negotiation Committee mandated to determine the discussions, while Umno has also entrusted the negotiations to its leadership at the state level.
Tuan Ibrahim said there was still room for negotiations to find the best mechanism to minimise clashes between the two parties.
“What is important is consensus. If all parties agree, there will be a way forward.
“There is still ample room, and this committee can also find a mechanism for us to avoid and, more importantly, minimise such clashes,” he said.
BN won 21 of the 28 Melaka state seats in the 2021 state election, while Pakatan Harapan won five seats and Perikatan Nasional won two seats through Bersatu.
