MANILA, Philippines— Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto took to social media on Sunday night to warn the public against a fake or AI-generated video using his face to promote a gambling website.
Sotto said the spread of AI-generated videos was becoming more dangerous as scammers use them for illegal promotions and other forms of online deception.
“Victims are pitiful. These kinds of fake or AI-generated videos are all over the place. Sometimes they look real. The audio sounds real too,” Sotto said.
He warned the public to be cautious of investment scams, love scams, and other schemes that use manipulated or fabricated videos to mislead people online.
“The scary part is that AI and these scams will only get better. After this, someone may video-call us looking and sounding like a person we know,” he said.
Sotto said awareness should be raised especially among family members who may be more vulnerable to such scams.
