A British tourist, Ahmed Hadi, has found himself stuck in Malaysia after authorities confiscated his passport over an unpaid RM7 parking fee. Frustrated and unable to leave the country, he has strongly criticized Malaysia, calling it a "hellhole with no human rights."

Parking Fee Dispute Turns into Legal Nightmare

Hadi’s ordeal began on December 7, 2024, when he and his family parked their car in Penang. Upon leaving, he attempted to pay the RM7 (£1.27) parking fee, but the machine failed to accept his cards. Seeking assistance, he pressed the help button and spoke with parking officials for about 10 minutes but was unable to resolve the issue.

Unable to exit, he decided to manually lift the plastic barrier, which broke in the process. "There was no other way out. It was quite annoying and ridiculous. I was gentle with the barrier, but it just caved in like paper," he explained.

Arrest and Legal Consequences

Days later, Malaysian authorities contacted Hadi regarding the incident. He was questioned, arrested, and taken to court, where his lawyer negotiated a settlement with the parking company. His wife, Lucy, ended up paying approximately RM13,600 (£2,425.41) in legal fees, bail, and other costs to secure his release.

However, eight weeks later, Hadi remains stranded as his passport has been seized as part of his bail conditions. He is scheduled to appear in court again on February 17, but he has no clarity on when—or if—his passport will be returned.

Harsh Criticism of Malaysia

Hadi, who once considered moving to Malaysia, has since changed his mind. He described his experience as a nightmare, saying, "I was willing to pay, but they wouldn’t take my money and wouldn’t let me leave. Now, I still don’t have my passport and no idea what happens next."

His frustration escalated into broader criticism of Malaysia’s legal system. "This country is a rip-off, and you're not free. We think Britain is broken, but this makes you realize how good we have it."

Lucy also shared her outrage, claiming Malaysian authorities targeted Hadi because they assumed he was a wealthy foreigner. "It’s basically a police state—there’s no freedom of speech. They arrest you for anything, and they do it for money," she alleged.

Meanwhile, the British Embassy in Malaysia has declined to comment on the matter.
