Arrowhead Stadium, home of the Chiefs, played host to Argentina’s World Cup opener against Algeria.
Mahomes was in the crowd as Messi put on one of the most memorable performances of the tournament so far.
After the match, the three-time Super Bowl winner took to social media to share his thoughts. He didn’t need words – a single goat emoji said it all.
The post was widely seen as a nod to Messi’s claim to being the greatest footballer of all time, especially after another unforgettable World Cup display.
Messi’s hat-trick took him to 16 World Cup goals, surpassing Brazilian legend Ronaldo and drawing level with Klose at the top of the all-time scoring charts.
Messi continues building his World Cup legacy
The Argentina captain’s latest performance added to an already remarkable list of achievements.
Messi became the first player in history to appear at six different World Cups and also marked his 200th appearance for Argentina during the match.
His three goals against Algeria come on the back of the seven he scored during Argentina’s victorious 2022 World Cup campaign.
That means Messi has now scored 10 World Cup goals since turning 35 – more than the entire World Cup tallies of several legends, including Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Thierry Henry, Rivaldo, Diego Maradona and Harry Kane.
With Argentina just one game into the tournament, Messi now has the chance to move clear of Klose and become the outright top scorer in World Cup history.
