KUALA LUMPUR - G. Pavithran’s goal proved to be the match-winner and gave Harimau Malaya the confidence to take control of their 2026 ASEAN Cup Group B match against the Philippines in Cheras last night.
Interim head coach Tan Cheng Hoe said the national squad started somewhat nervously but Pavithran’s goal helped restore their confidence and allowed them to control the game, particularly in the second half.
"The atmosphere and team bonding are very good at the moment. Of course, there is still room for improvement.
"In the second half, we were able to control the game and the players increasingly understood the tactics that were implemented,” he said at a post-match press conference.
Cheng Hoe said the substitutes also played an important role by bringing fresh energy to help the team maintain control of the game until the final whistle.
However, he acknowledged that the national squad was not at their best physically and did not create many chances against the Philippines.
Pavithran headed home the winner in the 16th minute to send Malaysia into the semi-finals, where they will face defending champions Vietnam in a two-leg tie on Aug 16 and 19.
Commenting on the encounter, he acknowledged that Vietnam would be the favourites but stressed that his players must play without fear.
Pavithran, who was named Player of the Match for the second time in the tournament, attributed the achievement to the support of Cheng Hoe and his teammates.
"The coach always gives me encouragement and support. After the first half, he encouraged us and provided some tactical guidance, including teaching me how to make forward runs.
"The senior players also give me a lot of encouragement and do not get angry when I make mistakes. They are always there to support me,” he said. - BERNAMA
