Kota Kinabalu: Datuk Seri Dr Joachim Gunsalan said despite numerous challenges, PBS remains steadfast in its commitment to defending the rights and interests of the people of Sabah.
“We have reached 40. In our political journey, we have been in government, in opposition, formed coalitions to govern, returned to the opposition, and are now part of the Government under Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS),” he said.
The Deputy Chief Minister II also reminded PBS members of the challenges the party has faced over the past four decades.
“PBS has experienced ups and downs, faced criticism and been underestimated. Some even predicted the party’s downfall. “However, all attempts to weaken PBS have failed. Today, we stand strong, celebrating 40 years an age of maturity for a political party,” he said.
Dr Joachim also stressed that PBS’ core struggle remains relevant to this day.
“Many may have forgotten or are unaware of the foundation of PBS’s struggle. Some are as old as the party itself or were still in school when PBS was established.
“But today, they have become leaders within the party. From the past to the present, PBS has consistently fought for political stability, progress, and prosperity for Sabah.”
He highlighted that PBS’ struggle remains crucial for Sabah’s future, particularly in fulfilling the demands of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63) and advancing the State, which still lags behind other regions in Malaysia.
Touching on the transition of PBS’s leadership, Dr Joachim said when President Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili entrusted him with the responsibilities of the presidency, he vowed to continue PBS’ noble mission.
“However, this task cannot be achieved without the unwavering support of every party member,” he said, urging PBS members to work diligently in strengthening the party for the benefit of the state and its people, with a spirit of unity and solidarity.
“To ensure PBS has a stronger voice, we must be more proactive and cultivate high-quality members. We welcome professionals, academics, and experienced individuals to join PBS because we all want the best for Sabah,” he said.
Dr Joachim also emphasised that experience has made PBS a resilient party.
“We continue our struggle with unwavering determination and loyalty. Let us rise and carry on this noble cause. The challenges we have faced should serve as lessons to improve our weaknesses and find the best strategies to strengthen PBS,” he said.
As it marks its 40th anniversary, he said PBS remains committed to championing the rights of the people of Sabah and ensuring the State’s stability and progress for future generations.
Among those present were PBS President Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili and his wife Datin Seri Chhunlin Roeung; PBS Founder and its Prime Advisory Council Chairman Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan, and his wife Puan Sri Genevieve; Deputy Presidents Datuk Seri Dr Yee Moh Chai and his wife Datin Seri Dr Vicky Yee; Datuk Jahid Jahim; Vice Presidents Datuk Johnny Mositun and Datuk Haji Ruslan Muharam; Women Chief Datuk Malianah Ugau; Youth Chief Dr Christopher Mandut; Dr Joachim’s wife Datin Seri Linda Ewit; Supreme Council Members and Prime Advisors of PBS.
