The man suspected of murdering his mother was reportedly struggling with significant debt, including money owed to loan sharks.
Kota Setar District Police Chief ACP Syed Basri Syed Ali revealed that, in addition to pressure from moneylenders, the suspect struggled to pay a RM700 monthly rental for a motorcycle used for p-hailing services. He was also reportedly burdened by overdue room rental payments.
Earlier, the body of 52-year-old Zaharullail Basir was discovered in a pool of blood at her home in Kedah. The 28-year-old suspect was arrested on a bus en route to Selangor less than 24 hours after the incident. He is currently being held to assist with the murder investigation.
Further investigations are ongoing to identify the motive, apart from the debt issue
While debt is a primary focus, investigations are ongoing to determine if there were other motives. Syed confirmed that the autopsy results identified the cause of death as a stab wound to the chest.
“The deceased suffered stab wounds to the left lung and heart, causing severe internal bleeding that likely resulted in death within a short period.”
Medical reports further indicated that the stab and slash wounds were inflicted by a hard, sharp object, consistent with a kitchen knife.
Despite testing negative for drugs, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) revealed that the suspect has a prior criminal record.
According to Berita Harian, the police are still tracing several missing items. Initial checks confirmed that a handbag containing jewellery, cash, and a mobile phone disappeared from the scene.
The suspect was brought to the Alor Setar Magistrate’s Court and has been remanded for seven days until 9 February. The case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code for murder.
