INITIAL police investigations found that the male suspect suspected of killing his own biological mother had a loan from an 'ah long' he had taken in Penang.
Kota Setar District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Syed Basri Syed Ali, said the suspect was also burdened with problems to pay off his RM700 monthly motorcycle rental for p-hailing and his room rent.
He said, however, further investigations were still continuing to identify the real cause of the incident apart from the debt problems.
Apart from that, he said, the police were also continuing efforts to trace other case items.
"Meanwhile, the autopsy results found that the victim's cause of death was a stab wound to the chest.
"The stab wound to the left lung and heart caused severe internal bleeding that could have resulted in death within a short period of time.
"The doctor also confirmed that the stab and slash wounds on the deceased's body were caused by a hard and sharp object such as a kitchen knife," he said as reported by Berita Harian.
It was earlier reported that Zahrullail Basir, 52, who was also an operations executive at a bank, was found dead with three stab wounds on her body, believed to have been killed by her son, last Monday.
Following this, the police arrested a man who was also the eldest son of the deceased at 8.34pm yesterday in a tour bus that was on its way to Selangor.
The 29-year-old suspect was remanded for seven days from yesterday until February 9 to assist in the investigation and the case is being investigated under Section 302 of the Penal Code. – February 4, 2026
