POLICE have opened an internal investigation into a video recording that went viral on social media showing a man believed to have been slapped by a policeman at a petrol station in the Taman Perling area, Johor Bahru on Sunday.

Acting Johor Bahru North District Police Chief, Superintendent Azrol Anuar Nor, said initial investigations found that the incident was believed to have occurred at about 6.50 pm.

The individual involved has been identified as a policeman on duty at the Johor Bahru North District Police Headquarters (IPD).

"The policeman in question was on leave when the incident occurred," he said in a statement on Monday.

He said that so far, the police have not received any reports regarding the incident, but the victim has been identified and efforts are underway to track down the individual to assist in the investigation.

"The police view any allegations of wrongdoing or misconduct involving officers and police personnel seriously.

“Following that, an internal investigation has been opened, and strict action will be taken if any violations of the law, regulations or code of conduct are found,” he said.

The public is advised not to speculate on the incident and to allow the authorities to conduct their investigation.

“The cooperation of the public who have information regarding this incident is highly welcomed, and the police assure that the investigation will be conducted transparently, fairly and with integrity,” he said.

A 32-second video went viral showing a motorcycle with a man and a woman being approached from the side by another motorcycle.

A man wearing a baseball cap then slapped the motorcyclist in the face.

The man who slapped him was then seen taking out his wallet from his trouser pocket and showing the motorcyclist a possible police card before they left the gas station. – January 12, 2026
