A 33-year-old police corporal with the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) in Ipoh, Perak, was killed in an accident when a car hit his motorcycle, with the driver fleeing the scene afterwards.

The incident happened on Tiger Lane yesterday (January 21) while Corporal Mohd Hafizan Othman was on his way to start his official shift at 4 PM.

Ipoh PDRM officer killed in road accident as driver flees the scene

Previously, Berita Harian reported that the officer, who was serving at the Kampung Rapat Police Station, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Ipoh District Police Chief, Assistant Commissioner Abang Zainal Abidin Abang Ahmad, said the victim’s motorcycle was hit when a Perodua Myvi was exiting a junction and entered the motorcycle’s lane.

“The accident, which involved a Yamaha Y16ZR and a Myvi, happened around 3:30 PM. The Myvi driver fled the scene. The victim has a wife and a three-year-old daughter,” he added.

The 80-year-old woman who fled the scene has now been arrested

Following the incident, Harian Metro reported that Abang Zainal confirmed the 80-year-old driver, who had fled the scene earlier, has now been arrested.

The elderly woman reportedly ran off immediately after the accident, leaving her car behind.

“The 80-year-old retiree was arrested at the Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Division at the Ipoh District Police Headquarters. An initial screening test showed she was negative for drugs,” he said.

He added that the case will be investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
