KUALA LUMPUR - The Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) will expand the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and drone technology to strengthen security control along the country’s land and maritime borders.
Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department (KDNKA) director CP Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the move towards technology-based enforcement was aimed at reducing reliance on manpower while enhancing operational efficiency.
He said the technologies would boost patrol and surveillance capabilities, enabling the police to curb smuggling and cross-border crimes more effectively.
"KDNKA is responsible for safeguarding security along the country's borders, while control at official entry points is handled by the Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) together with other enforcement agencies.
"Our borders are vast, particularly the stretch from Perlis to Kelantan, apart from the challenges in Sabah and Sarawak. Therefore, the use of these technologies is a necessity,” he told a press conference at the General Operations Force (GOF) Central Brigade headquarters in Cheras here today.
Mohd Yusri, who returned yesterday after attending the 39th Thailand-Malaysia High-Level Committee (HLC) meeting in Bangkok, said PDRM was also stepping up intelligence-sharing with neighbouring countries.
He said the close cooperation, involving the Malaysian Armed Forces (MAF) as well as counterparts from Thailand and Indonesia, includes joint operations, integrated patrols and regular working group meetings.
Meanwhile, he stressed that community policing remains a key element of the GOF's operations at its 178 control posts nationwide.
The close rapport established by GOF personnel with local communities has encouraged residents to work more closely with the authorities by sharing information, which has contributed significantly to efforts to curb cross-border crimes.
"Information provided by the community has been invaluable in helping us thwart the intrusion of illegal immigrants (PATI).
"In fact, they also serve as our eyes and ears in preventing the smuggling of controlled and subsidised goods such as petrol, diesel, rice, flour and cooking gas,” he said. - BERNAMA
