Pearly-Thinaah snatch gold medal in Birmingham

KUALA LUMPUR – National women’s doubles Pearly Tan-Thinaah Muralitharan win gold at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games after winning against England’s Chloe Birch-Lauren Smith 21-5, 21-8 today.

The win makes it two gold medals for the pair with the first coming after delivering the winning point during the mixed team event on Wednesday.

The world number 11 pair took down India’s Treesa Jolly-Gayatri Gopichand 21-13, 21-6 yesterday in the semi-finals.

They helped Malaysia defend the women’s doubles gold following Chow Mei Kuan-Vivian Hoo’s victory at the 2018 edition of the games in Gold Coast, Australia.

Meanwhile, despite a stellar run, national shuttler Ng Tze Yong came up short to snag gold at the 2022 Commonwealth Games after losing to India’s Lakshya Sen 21-19, 9-21, 16-21 today in the final.

His silver makes it two medals for him at the games. He won the gold medal on Wednesday after Malaysia beat India in the final of the mixed team event.

Yesterday, the world number 42  took down 13th seed Srikanth Kidambi from India in the semi-finals after he came from behind to win 13-21, 21-19, 21-10.

In the quarter-finals, the 22-year-old defeated world champion Loh Kean Yew of Singapore 15-21, 21-14, 21-11.

Tze Yong’s lost today means that Malaysia failed to defend the men’s singles gold medal, which was won by Datuk Lee Chong Wei in the 2018 edition in the Gold Coast, Australia.– The Vibes, August 8, 2022
