A PENANG-born woman living in Perth, Australia, died after suffering injuries in an alleged assault by her partner, with police now investigating the case as a domestic violence-related murder.
Kah Ming Tan, 28, was found unresponsive at a residence on Taree Street, St James, at about 8.30 pm on Aug 26.
She was taken to Royal Perth Hospital by St John WA but later died.
Homicide detectives allege Tan was assaulted several days before she was taken to hospital and that her partner, Younis Qambari, 38, caused the extensive injuries that led to her death.
Police said the alleged offending took place in the context of a family and domestic relationship.
Qambari has been charged with murder and remains in custody after making a brief appearance at Perth Magistrates Court on Friday.
Bail was not considered, and he is due to return to court in September.
Tan reportedly attended a secondary school in Butterworth.
She leaves behind three children, aged three, five and seven, who were at the residence when she died.
The case has left Tan’s family devastated, with her twin sister telling 7NEWS Australia that she was struggling to come to terms with the loss.
The family had apparently been worried about Tan’s safety before her death.
They reportedly contacted police about three months earlier after noticing injuries on her and becoming concerned about her welfare.
Western Australia Premier Roger Cook said Tan’s death was a grim reminder of the need to confront gender-based and family violence.
“It sounds like a horrific situation and one that took place in the presence of children. Our thoughts go out to everyone impacted,” he was quoted as saying by WA Today.
Cook said the state government had invested more than A$800 million in additional funding since coming into office and would continue working with communities and advocates.
Domestic violence advocates, however, said the scale of the problem required greater investment.
Domestic Violence Training and Support Institute chief executive Jolene Ellat said the funding available did not come close to what was needed.
“We need to see that investment increase to match the scale of the crisis that it is,” she said.
Meanwhile, Tan’s family has launched a fundraising campaign to help care for her three children.
The campaign had raised about A$58,261 (RM171,000) at the time of reporting, with the money intended to cover childcare, education, daily expenses and other immediate needs as the family deals with her death. – September 10, 2026
